But, his retreat to similar characters and situations runs the risk of appearing like a retread: Johnny Keough, the hardened, violent tough from the skids who serves as the central character of Hynes’s latest novel closely resembles earlier Hynes protagonists Keith Kavanagh and Clayton Reid, and the booze-and-drug ridden Newfoundland milieu feels likewise old hat for the author. The book is voice-driven, often an uneasy fuel for a novel, yet Johnny's monologue grabs readers by the scruff and never lets go. The lifestyle has resulted in violence both by and against him, stints in prison, and even being hailed as an unlikely hero for helping an elderly couple escape a house fire. Have you read it yet?

But no one could tell it as Johnny does. Hynes's gift is in serving up the pieces of the story to fall as they will, leaving you to assemble the smash. I both loved and feared the hero and was left with a deeper awareness that we never know what path another has had to walk. Most of all, Johnny is full of stories—too full, perhaps. Get this from a library! I hung in until the very end...although it nearly reduced my consciousness to mush. The book's blurbs compare it to Trainspotting, that nineties pinnacle of sex, drugs and dance music, but Trainwrecking might be more apt; at bottom, the novel is a potent and precise manual of how human disasters are made. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Hynes’ writing is coarse and musical and completely absorbing, even addictive. Every page convinces, from the grittier details—how to hotwire a minivan with a popsicle stick or make ketchup brew—to the unexpectedly lyrical ones, as when Johnny finds one little wooden bead in his pocket that comes from the necklace of the woman behind the counter of the convenience store he robbed.

Yeah, I cried too. (so he also thinks with that Newfy accent) Events at the beginning of the book cause him to hitchhike across Canada. He complains and confesses, and jokes, rants and lies non-stop, provoking and shocking.

Perhaps with his beginnings it’s impossible for him to find peace or stability or growth. At first I enjoyed the rough realistic descriptions of Johnny and his life story, but by the end the unending violence and injury became a bit too much for my (admittedly sheltered) taste! There are similarities to Martin McDonagh’s hypnotic early monologue Rum and Vodka, or James Kelman’s story “The Burn,” stories of men who can’t get their lives right, told with a similarly unforgettable richness of language.

Johnny's the epitome of the underdog. In a few years, Johnny ends up in his stepfather's shoes (and literally in his clothes), forced to reckon with who he is now and how he got here. Hitching west, Johnny collides with rich and poor, young and old.

At some point I found the rhythm of things, and was able to understand Johnny, but it took a. Wow, this was a tough read for a variety of reasons but I'm glad I stuck it through. Brilliant book. The main character Johnny changes in reader’s eyes as novel goes. But like everything he gets involved with, the quest doesn’t proceed straightforwardly.

Further, Hynes flips between "you" and "he" until the distinction disappears, a skillful trick that forces readers into Johnny's skull and again reminds us we could be him.

But, it was not my kind of book at this time. I'm really glad I came across this book. Johnny is long-suffering, and in many ways the author of his own misfortune, but he maintains a resilient and unsentimental attitude toward life: “You learn to go without,” he reasons. Turn this around and you have Hynes's revelation: Anyone so harshly abused could become an addict, a prisoner, a violent thief, a wounded lover, a lost soul.

But I think what worked best for me was the narrative voice, which is simultaneously first and third person — and occasionally second person — which produces a nice bi-polar effect, and is frequently funny and self-effacing.
