We have carried out, and now report on, the first large-scale data science study to measure the genders, ethnicities, geographic origins, and birth decades of artists in the collections of 18 major U.S. art museums. For instance, in one field, the Art of the United States (U.S.), museums across the country have worked in recent years to incorporate art by women, African Americans, Latinxs, Asian Americans, and Native Americans into a narrative once dominated by white male artists [4–6]. We then scraped the catalog of holdings [12–29] using customized code we wrote with the R project for statistical computing [30], retaining a web link for each item.
