Ryan focuses on “Time Attack” which is one of the more pure race disciplines, and he is really good at it… His exceptional driving helped him maneuver his 750whp/ 650wtq Evolution X through an undefeated race season. The shoot will run though the end of the month and then it’s back to the Cinesthetics studio in Boulder for post-production.
I didn’t get too many good photos of the suite on my SLRs because the view was so ridiculous i went straight to timelapsing on both cameras. The idea in this kind of environment is to travel light and stay mobile. The photos came out pretty raw so i went with that in Lightroom and graded them super gritty. Getting into Vegas i was stoked to get to the MGM and see the rest of the Film Matters team (probably more so than they were to see me considering the time). I shot this whole project with Nikon’s 85mm f/1.4 AF-D. It’s such a versatile lens that i didn’t feel the need to use either of the 2.8 zooms i had with me at all. It was a challenge staying out of the film crew’s way but the results were amazing. Photojournalism is not just about artistic expression, it’s also about making sure that people can see what’s happening. To make things even better, the front compartment that stores the computer and a lot of the small stuff is removable–making two fully separate bags for overhead storage. Jimmy was the sole reason i accomplished anything of value during my stay in Nola. Going from a Nikon D3 12.1 megapixels to a Phase One digital back is night and day in terms of quality and perhaps more importantly, resolution. Sometimes you don’t get to go to any length to get the shot, and instead it’s simply about being at the right place at the right time and doing your part. It’s good to come prepared with basic model releases in case you think you’re going to need them.

The only time i don’t love it is when it’s focuses near infinity, where i think it gets a bit softer than say an 70-200. Shows are really good practice for shooting in tough lighting situations and keeping up with changes in exposure on the fly. One thing i did notice is that the Canon takes a pretty obscure battery and while it is supplied with the timer, i imagine it wouldn’t be the most convenient battery to go out looking for in a pinch.
