In order to further the knowledge and appreciation of Paul Rudolph’s work, the Paul Rudolph Heritage Foundation offers the Paul Rudolph duplex for viewing by student groups and other visitors. Rudolph had his travails with the Yale Architecture School (now brilliantly refurbished and sparkling) where he had been dean, and had some rough years after his brutalist style went entirely out of fashion but now has come roaring back into the public eye as the true innovator he was.

The MODULIGHTOR building is the last publicly accessible masterpiece in New York by the architect Paul Rudolph (1918-1997), influential modernist and dean of the Yale School of Architecture in the sixties. Wegner is refurbishing the top two floors for Rudolph’s centenary a year from now and if you want a thrilling place to give a cocktail party or private dinner you can do that. Paul Rudolph (1918-1997) was a highly prominent and consummately creative American architect, whose prolific career spanned from the 1940’s to the 1990’s. When I first came upon Paul Rudolph’s Modulightor building as part of the wonderful series of events that comprises Archtober, I was kicking myself.I’ve lived in NY for a good part of my life and must have walked by the building countless times.

The MODULIGHTOR building is the last publicly accessible masterpiece in New York by the architect Paul Rudolph (1918-1997), influential modernist and dean of the Yale School of Architecture in the sixties. Because it is lived in, it has the added charm of feeling lively.

A must-see for modern design fans: The four-story Modulightor Building at 246 East 58th Street was designed by Paul Rudolph from 1989-1994 as a residential and commercial structure to house the lighting company by the same name which he founded with Ernst Wagner.

This masterwork of high Modernism embraces compositional complexity and layered space while supporting multiple functions. Rudolph co-founded Modulightor to create the kind of lighting he needed to compliment his own work–and then designed its glowing headquarters in midtown Manhattan’s design district. Docents will be on hand to provide information and answer questions; make sure to bring your camera and sketchbook!
