At the front and along the margins of Loch Skeen, above the waterfall, a superb suite of moraines defines the changing positions of the ice margin of one of these glaciers, each one a heap of gravel, sand and silt.

The drive through these mountains gets narrower as one approaches the parking area from the south and it is quite exciting to park and take short hike up the trail either side to view the falls. Hanging valleys occur where a main valley has been deepened by glacial erosion more than its tributary valleys. It plunges into Moffatdale over a series of cascades and plunge pools, each controlled by variations in the resistance to erosion of the Silurian greywacke sandstone and mudstone bedrock. Nearby to the east at Dob’s Linn, the Moffat Shale is rich in graptolite fossils, making it an internationally important site defining the boundary between the Ordovician and Silurian systems of rock strata.
Park at the Grey Mare's Tail car park - there are two parts, one on each side of the river. inadvertently caught and also ‘no catches’. A steady 45 minute walk, takes the visitor (with a head for heights) from the car park at the Grey Mare's Tail, up the thousand foot of ascent.

Grey Mares Tail, Moffat The Grey Mare’s Tail and Nature Reserve is managed by the National Trust for Scotland and is 10 miles north of Moffat (and the M74 motorway) along the winding Moffat Water. This walk climbs past the falls and continues up to beautiful Loch Skeen, ringed by craggy hillsides. It's worth it when you get there.Car park at start is a NTS one, so free to members.

For a real sense of its scale, take a walk up the hillside to find the hidden Loch Skeen at the top, the Dumfriesshire scenery is something rather special.
A particularly prominent lateral/end moraine, known locally as ‘The Causey’, runs along the east side of Loch Skeen for approximately one kilometre. We went looking for this waterfall, seen in the Scottish brochure of the National Trust.Entering the sat nav co-ordinates, it took us deep into the Scottish hills, passing thro' Moffat, a small town, then the road sweeps and dips its way into the hills.We seem to be driving for a long time, without seeing any signs, or indication where the falls were.

We stopped off at the Gordon Arms Yarrow for food afterwards and this lovely country pub served very nice food. Do not proceed beyond the barrier as the onward path has collapsed.
Please support our work! The bedrock over which the Tail Burn falls is clearly layered, with ribs of hard “greywacke” sandstone separated by crevices where softer mudstone has been worn away.

In late April the hills around Loch Skeen slowly relinquish their snow Loch Skeen (Loch Skene is in Aberdeenshire) hides in the Southern Uplands, north east of Moffat, at 1,700 feet (510 metres) above sea level. Or if you just fancy coming out on our next trip, you are more than welcome. On the north side of Moffatdale the tributary valley of the Tail Burn, which drains Loch Skeen, forms a hanging valley some 250m above Moffatdale. The main path begins on the west side of the burn - keep right on the main path at a fork, soon crossing a footbridge to an interpretation area in an old sheepfold. They can be seen as parallel, heathery ridges and hummocks.
The well constructed path ends at this point; unless intent on a longer and more challenging hillwalk the return is the same way, though passing the magnificent Grey Mare's Tail once again is no hardship. The strata are now steeply inclined to the north, having been tilted up as they were scraped off and piled up against the trench wall by the subducting Iapetus ocean. The great cataract that is the Grey Mare's Tail waterfall becomes more impressive with each step - as does the drop into the ravine!

The path is steep and narrow for the first part, and at certain points you need a head for heights. Each greywacke-mudstone pair is formed from a large submarine avalanche of gravel, sand and mud that originated in shallow shelf seas and flowed rapidly down into a deep ocean trench, where the cloud of sediment settled on the ocean floor.
