NEWS: Christina Ramberg and Huma Bhabha new exhibitions @ BALTIC Two new concurrent exhibitions will bring together exceptional artworks from US-based artists Christina Ramberg and Huma Bhabha, many of which have not been seen in the UK before By Helen Redfern on Monday, September 28th, 2020 In her sketchbook, she described her drawings of corsets as ‘Containing, restraining, reforming, hurting, compressing, binding, transforming a lumpy shade into a clean smooth line’ – a description that speaks to the questions of power dynamics, hierarchies, gender construction, desire, fetishism, and increasing societal pressure towards standardisation, that she explored throughout her career. Ramberg emerged as one of the most intriguing painters of a generation known as Chicago Imagists, and left a remarkable body of comic, formally elegant, erotically sinister paintings. She once described the drawings of corsets in her sketchbooks as ‘Containing, restraining, re-forming, hurting, compressing, binding, transforming a lumpy shape into a clean smooth line’. Artists include: Alexandra Bircken, Gaylen Gerber, Allen Jones, Konrad Klapheck, Ghislaine Leung, Hans Christian Lotz, Senga Nengudi, Ana Pellicer, Charlotte Posenenske, Richard Rezac, Diane Simpson, Terre Thaemlitz, Frieda Toranzo Jaeger and Kathleen White. Ranging from impressive, nationally-significant collections in Grade listed buildings, to historic houses that now have a particular focus on local, contemporary artists, here’s our guide to Cumbria’s collection of art galleries. The American artist Christina Ramberg (1946–1995) saw how the female form in particular has become a screen on to which the fears and fantasies of our culture are projected. Though her works are held in major collections, such as at MoMA in New York and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C, the American painter Christina Ramberg (1946-1995) is one of the many great women artists that have not received the full historical recognition or international visibility they deserve. At the centre of Ramberg’s elegant, erotically charged paintings and small, obsessive drawings, however, is the human body, often depicted in fragments or as a headless torso bound by corsets, hair, bras or cloth.
