If life were fair, Jam Gallahue would still be at home in New Jersey with her sweet British boyfriend, Reeve Maxfield.

Maybe this could have been a compelling story with some potential, but instead of tapping into a teenager's mind, Wolitzer instead seems to have forgotten what adolescence actually feels like and instead sketches out some vague stock teens interspersed with vague cool references that she thinks teens are into. I think at that point, I had recently read the Bell Jar, and I was even more curious about the story because it references Plath’s work. Violent Content I sped through this in one day as I didn't feel a particular connection to the narrator or other students, things got wrapped up way too nicely considering, and certain tropes happened as well as a "twist" inserted that se. Despite the novel’s title, there is very little of Plath in it.

Reeve is also very much alive.
There are, as you know, two sides to every story and my feelings for Belzhar are true to this. There was also one moment in which a big thing happens, and Jam isn’t there. I recommend it to you for the engrossing lives that are lived through this novel. I mean, fine, I love a good twist. « Hide Spoiler. Not to mention that Jam is surrounded by classmates who have lived actual tragedies. When Jam can’t recover from her boyfriend’s death, her desperate family sends her to The Wooden Barn, a boarding school for distraught teens. It is here that they are given diaries that with every entry transport the user to a miraculous other world known as Belzhar. Maybe this could ha.

Just no. It's impossible to put down. On the whole, I’m glad I read it, but it didn’t resonate with me the way some of my other recent reads have. This book was bad. Welcome back. It would take much more than that to help her with this very serious mental condition. But I feel like I got nothing out of this. My initial interest was piqued when I saw this book billed, somewhere along the way, as a retelling of The Bell Jar. Change ), You are commenting using your Facebook account. I thought it would at the very least end up being just an okay book.

I review and blog about books here at The Books Are Everywhere. Deep within this novel lies a stark consideration of the accountability of young love and the lasting impact of misplaced longing. Plus it may be just me, but I didn't see the ending coming at all. The narrator of the novel, Jamaica “Jam” Gallahue, is enrolled at The Wooden Barn in Vermont, an institution dedicated to the care of “emotionally fragile, highly intelligent teenagers.” (Are there any other kind?)

But this one destroyed the credibility of the protagonist, and the author too, because the whole point was Jam's involvement with a group of kids who had experienced such tremendously horrible and heartbreaking things. that the reviews shown do not properly reflect the range of media opinion now available, Like till the point my mom had to take away my book! Just so so bad. In order for this book to have worked for me there needed to be a strong emotional foundation portrayed in Jam and Reeve’s relationship and it was just not there.

The magical journals (Are there any other kind?)

There is no depth of emotion, no character development, limited growth, stunted pacing, and one hell of an obnoxious ending that had me going, “Seriously?!”. The syllabus focuses on the work of a single author, and this time Mrs. Quenell has selected the poet laureate of teenage angst: Sylvia Plath. Like pretty much everything else in this story it’s all surface, no depth. Mrs. Quenell also requires her students to “look out for one another.” I'm a 20 year old bibliophile, bookseller and publishing student who reads mostly YA! The characters are fully developed and believable misfit teens, and the plot's twists and turns had me breathless. She didn’t. One character in particular has a bit of a foul mouth, but the language is kind of sprinkled throughout the story. Readers need not be familiar with Plath’s oeuvre, but one of Wolitzer’s triumphs is that they may be drawn to read or revisit “The Bell Jar.” Ultimately, “Belzhar” is about friendship and recovery; Wolitzer is, as always, most observant when writing about intense devotion among close-knit groups of kindred souls. They have dubbed this place “Belzhar” and it turns out to be a healing place for each of them. I think this is the sort of book that will appeal to fans of We Were Liars (though the twists are nowhere even remotely similar) in the way that it is about damaged teens who are part of a “secret club” and shares a similar tone and feel with that work. The last few pages were just too much, in case I was stupid and didn't get it. And oddly, I could actually relate to some of what Jam experiences, but then she ruined it with the "twist" - which I had already guessed. Mrs. Quenell, a kind and generous mentor, distributes a set of journals and requires her students to write twice-weekly entries. If life were fair, Jam Gallahue would still be  at home in New Jersey with her sweet British  boyfriend, Reeve Maxfield. His name was Reeve Maxfield, and I loved him and then he died,” Jam confesses at the outset. I feel cheated and manipulated into trying to feeling sorry for a girl who got obsessed with a guy who was so obviously not into her.

i'm conflicted about a number of its different elements, annoyed/perplexed by others, but also pretty impressed by the big reveal's ability to genuinely surprise me. Ages 12-16." Seriously, fuck you. Forced, predictable, patronizing, trite.

Considering Wolitzer is well established in adult literary fiction, I suppose I figured she was likely to have a shot at creating a truly wrenching story of lost love even if that love was so brief. Jam says she is devastated, and I guess we are to believe her, but there is nothing in the writing that ever conveys her devastation or evoked any sort of emotion from me as a reader. I've been sitting here in front of my laptop for more than half an hour just fuming and raging inside because of this book.

To add insult to injury the book closes with a few final chapters that wrap everything up neatly with a bow of overly tidy, patronizing explanation and rainbows for all. This is definitely my most disappointing read of the year so far.

My friend Jamie at the Perpetual Page Turner had a much more positive experience than I did as well as some very moving words on the impact of The Bell Jar that is well worth your read.
